If you’re a new home buyer or renovating an existing space, these steps will help you get your measurements correct so you can get a more accurate quote. In some cases, window blinds may need to be measured after they have been re-sized in order to fit new window dimensions as well.
If you’re planning on redecorating your living room, you’ll first need to measure for new blinds. The size of the window will affect which type of blinds are appropriate. For example, if you have a long skinny window in your living room, it’s most likely not feasible to buy vertical blinds since they would be too narrow and most likely won’t cover the whole width of the opening. You’ll need horizontal blinds instead.
Inside Mount or Outside Mount?
There are two ways to hang your blinds and shades: inside mount or outside mount.
Inside mounted window treatments are attached inside of your window jam or frame. This type of window treatment is also called inside mount, flush-mount, and sometimes concealed window treatment.
Outside mounted window treatments are attached outside window jam or frame. This window treatment type is also known as outside mount window treatments, over-the-window blinds, and sometimes window blinds.
Supplies Needed
First, you’ll need some supplies! You will need paper tape or masking tape, pencil and measuring tape (also a ladder if you have extra large windows). Also have on hand the type of window coverings you want to buy so you can get their measurements as well (i.e., curtain lengths). If at all possible, try not to purchase your new window treatments until after this step – it could save you money by making sure the sizes work with what you’re planning on buying in terms of size requirements like length and width. How to Measure Windows for Inside Mounted Blinds
Step 1: Measure the width of the window frame.
Measure from inside edge to inside edge at the bottom, middle, and top of the window. Record the narrowest measurement.
Step 2: Measure the height of the window frame.
Measure from the inner edge of the upper frame to the top of the sill (or however far down you’d like your blinds to go) along the left, middle, and right side of the window. Record the smallest measurement.
Step 3: Deduct 1/4″ to 1/2″ from the width measurement to prevent your blinds from scratching the sides of the window frame.
Step 4: Deduct 1/4″ from the height measurement if you don’t want your blinds to rest on the sill.
How to Measure Windows for Outside Mounted Blinds
Step 1: Measure the width of the window including the molding or frame.
Step 2: Measure the height of the window including the molding or frame.
Round your measurements up, because you can easily adjust the length of longer shades or blinds.
Step 3: Add at least 3″ to the width measurement for an overlap of 1 1/2″ on either side of the window frame.
Step 4: Add at least 3″ to the height measurement.
Headrails typically add about 2″ to the height of your window frame and you always want to round up for height, as blind height is easy to adjust.
Step 5: For vertical blinds, add 4” to the width and 3” to the height.
Overestimating the width measurement will help compensate for when the vanes or slats are fully opened.
